How to Winterize Your Trailer: Keep It Protected All Season Long

As temperatures drop and the snow starts to fall, it’s time to start thinking about winterizing your trailer. Whether you own a dump trailer, flatbed, utility trailer, or enclosed unit, a little preparation now can save you from costly repairs and rust come springtime.
At 2&41 Sales, we know your trailer is an investment—and protecting it through the winter is key to keeping it in great shape for years to come.
1. Give Your Trailer a Good Cleaning
Before you store or park your trailer for the season, wash it thoroughly. Road grime, salt, and dirt can cause corrosion over time, especially on the frame and undercarriage.
Use a pressure washer to remove buildup.
Don’t forget to clean inside dump beds or enclosed trailers.
Let everything dry completely to prevent moisture-related damage.
2. Inspect for Damage
Winter weather can make small issues worse. Take a few minutes to:
Check for rust spots, cracks, or loose bolts.
Inspect wiring and lights for wear or corrosion.
Make sure tires are in good shape and inflated to the correct PSI.
Fixing these small issues now can prevent major headaches later.
3. Protect Your Battery
If your trailer has a hydraulic system or onboard power, be sure to disconnect and store the battery in a dry, climate-controlled place. Keep it charged periodically over the winter to extend its life.
4. Grease and Lubricate Moving Parts
Before temperatures drop too low, grease the axles, hinges, and latches. Cold weather can cause parts to seize up if they’re not properly lubricated.
5. Cover and Store Properly
If possible, store your trailer under a roof or in a garage. If outdoor storage is your only option:
Use a quality trailer cover or tarp to keep out snow and moisture.
Park on gravel or pavement, not grass or dirt, to reduce moisture exposure.
Chock the wheels and use jack stands if storing for a long period to relieve pressure on the tires.
6. Keep an Eye on Tires and Brakes
Cold air can cause tire pressure to drop, so check periodically throughout the winter. Also, if you move your trailer occasionally during the season, make sure brakes and lights are working properly.
